Motion Facts and Information

  1. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Conflicting Messages, One message or signal comes from the middle (or inner) ear that controls balance and the other message comes from the eyes. During changes in position caused by travel these two signals conflict or disagree. Or seen another way, reading a book the view remains stable while the body is twisted and turned during travel. These two signals end up at the nausea center of the brain and with such confusion is it a surprise that motion sickness is the result.

  2. Motion sickness causes reduced blood flow and this in turn reduces the body temperature making the sufferer feel cold and clammy.

  3. Motion sickness is common and normal. Nearly anyone can be made motion sick by an appropriate stimulus, except for individuals with no vestibular system.

  4. What Can I Do for Motion Sickness: Do not read while traveling if you are subject to motion sickness, and do not sit in a seat facing backward.

  5. To help motion sickness always ride where your eyes will see the same motion that your body and inner ears feel, e.g. sit in the front seat of the car and look at the distant scenery; go up on the deck of the ship and watch the horizon; sit by the window of the airplane and look outside. In an airplane choose a seat over the wings where the motion is the least.

  6. Natural ginger for motion or sea sickness. There is medical evidence that this does indeed help relieve N/V. How it works is also not known. Ginger extract can be found in most health food stores.

  7. SEA Bands for motion sickness can help prevent the unpleasant symptoms of travel sickness.

  8. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; Focus your eyes on the horizon

  9. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: In the car: sit in the front seat or drive.

  10. Acupressure may reduce symptoms of sea sickness. Use "Sea Bands" as commercially available.
